Gaels Shut Out Lopes 53-0 on the Road
By AJ Clement
PHOENIX, Ariz. —The Saint Mary's Gaels (5-0) visited the Grand Canyon University Lopes (2-2) on Saturday at Saint Mary's Stadium. The performance was a well-rounded display of the Gaels' offensive tempo and defensive dominance, overwhelming a Lopes side that is in search of momentum.
At the opening whistle, the Lopes tested the Gael's defence immediately as the opening kickoff was sent wide, and penalty was awarded to GCU during the center scrum that followed. The Gaels quickly responded, forcing a turnover, and began setting the pace for the remainder of the match. The Lopes defence initially resisted, holding the Gaels up at the try line by the Lopes defence, but Saint Mary's ultimately struck first in the 5th minute as Iosefa Toia'ivao broke through and scored the first try of the match. Moments later, Dom Besag and Atelea Tengi added tries of their own, extending the Gaels' lead to 19-0 after just 10 minutes of play. A penalty gave the Lopes an opportunity to respond via a penalty conversion, but the kick came up short. Although GCU showed promise of dangerous attacking threats deep into Saint Mary's territory, a strong Gaels defence was able to force errors and penalties at the breakdown. Tengi's second try of the half sent the Gaels into halftime ahead 31-0.
Saint Mary's picked it up where it left off in the second half. Besag powered through for his second try of the match in the 49th minute following a prolonged attacking sequence aided by numerous GCU penalties. With the Lopes unable to respond, the scoring continued as Oli Cline and Siale Ofa combined on a tactical kick. As time dwindled, the Lopes looked toward their subs to get on the board. In the 71st minute, the Lopes carried the ball 5 meters from the try line before being called for a knock on. Saint Mary's closed out the match with the disciplined defence they are known for, preserving the 53-0 shutout after 80 minutes of play.
The lone statistical blemish came on conversions, where the Gaels finished at 44% on the afternoon. That mark follows a combined 34% conversion rate over their last two matches, an area Saint Mary's will look to sharpen as competition stiffens. Even so, the Gaels' consistency across all phases continues to place them firmly in the national championship conversation. Defensively, Saint Mary's was once again clinical, recording a shutout and limiting GCU to minimal opportunities despite extended stretches of possession. The Gaels' ability to win the breakdown and force errors underscored a disciplined defensive performance that set the platform for their attack. Offensively, Saint Mary's showed depth and balance, scoring nine tries through five different players. The varied scoring threats and sustained tempo highlighted a Gaels side capable of applying pressure from multiple avenues throughout the match.
